Winter holidays in the Tyrolean Wipptal
The Tyrolean Wipptal is an insider tip for all those who long for a relaxed winter holiday in western Austria, where fun on the slopes is not neglected. Located south of the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck, the Wipptal with its impressive side valleys extends to the Brenner Pass on the border with South Tyrol. For winter sports enthusiasts, the Bergeralm chalets, which are only a few steps away from the valley station of the Bergeralm mountain railways, are the ideal base camp for a sporty, active chalet holiday in the snowy Tyrolean mountains. A varied winter activity program also awaits you in the region away from the diverse range of slopes on the Bergeralm.
Skiing holidays in Tyrol
The Bergeralm ski & leisure arena is only a carving turn away from your chalet. With its state-of-the-art lifts up to over 2,200 meters and almost 30 kilometers of slopes of all degrees of difficulty, it is just as popular with ambitious hobby athletes as it is with beginners. A ski school, a children's area, free childcare and attractive family ski passes await families and ski bambinis.
The world's largest test portal Skiresort.de recently awarded the Bergeralm the “Insider's Tip 2019” award as the world's leading ski area up to 30 kilometers. In addition, dozens of snow cannons guarantee snow from the beginning of December to the end of March. And three times a week, the Bergeralm with four slopes becomes one of the largest night skiing arenas in Europe.
Other well-known winter sports destinations such as the numerous ski areas in and around Innsbruck or the Stubai Glacier can be reached within 45 minutes by car.
Winter hiking and snowshoeing
In the cold season it becomes clear that the Wipptal is not only a hiking paradise in summer. Around 70 kilometers of perfectly groomed winter hiking trails are waiting to be conquered. On the valley tour to the neighboring village of Matrei, for example, you can start right outside the front door of your chalet, and the Nößlachhütte can also be easily reached after a short gondola ride from the middle station of the Bergeralm.
Those who prefer to swap their hiking boots for snowshoes should do so on a guided snowshoe hike. The rustic huts along the marked trails provide for Tyrolean delicacies and one or two thirst quenchers. The right equipment is available for you free of charge at the information office in Steinach.
Ski tours & cross-country skiing
The Tyrolean Wipptal and its untouched side valleys are a true winter Eldorado for ski touring fans. In addition to its scenic highlights, the region is also known for its varied tours and its guaranteed snow (thanks to its location on the weather divide between North and South Tyrol). The region also scores with around 70 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails, 40 kilometers of which are in the Gschnitztal, not far from your chalet. All trails in the Wipptal can be used free of charge! For cross-country beginners there is equipment rental in the immediate vicinity of the Bergeralm chalets.
Sledding & ice skating
There are nine perfectly groomed toboggan runs around our chalet village. All are easy to moderate. The longest of the natural toboggan runs leads from the highest monastery in Central Europe, Maria Waldrast (1,570 m), five kilometers to Matrei. Some of the tracks are even illuminated at night, and there are places to stop for refreshments everywhere to strengthen yourself before the ascent or to end the evening comfortably after the toboggan run. Those who prefer to be more comfortable can take the Bergeralmbahn to the middle station and toboggan from there back into the valley almost to the front door. There is also a toboggan rental on site.
The Wipptal holiday region invites you to ice skate on numerous outdoor ice rinks that are illuminated in the evening, but also in the Steinach indoor ice rink, completely relaxed and without the hustle and bustle. The ice rink also offers ice skate rental, and there are penguin figures for the little ones that make learning to ice skate even more fun. The older ones get their money's worth during the Christmas holidays with the hot rhythms of the “ice disco” in the mountaineering village of St. Jodok.
Guestcard Wipptal
As our guest, you will receive the Wipptal guest card upon arrival and benefit from numerous free holiday activities and discounts. The card is, for example, a free ticket for local trains and all bus routes in the Wipptal region. It includes discounts from various service partners in the region and free or reduced participation in the guest program. The free ski bus, the free use of the cross-country ski trails and the included equipment rental are also popular.
