Winter holidays in the Tyrolean Wipptal

The Tyrolean Wipptal is an insider tip for all those who long for a relaxed winter holiday in western Austria, where fun on the slopes is not neglected. Located south of the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck, the Wipptal with its impressive side valleys extends to the Brenner Pass on the border with South Tyrol. For winter sports enthusiasts, the Bergeralm chalets, which are only a few steps away from the valley station of the Bergeralm mountain railways, are the ideal base camp for a sporty, active chalet holiday in the snowy Tyrolean mountains. A varied winter activity program also awaits you in the region away from the diverse range of slopes on the Bergeralm.

Skiing holidays in Tyrol

The Bergeralm ski & leisure arena is only a carving turn away from your chalet. With its state-of-the-art lifts up to over 2,200 meters and almost 30 kilometers of slopes of all degrees of difficulty, it is just as popular with ambitious hobby athletes as it is with beginners.   A ski school, a children's area, free childcare and attractive family ski passes await families and ski bambinis.

The world's largest test portal Skiresort.de recently awarded the Bergeralm the “Insider's Tip 2019” award as the world's leading ski area up to 30 kilometers. In addition, dozens of snow cannons guarantee snow from the beginning of December to the end of March. And three times a week, the Bergeralm with four slopes becomes one of the largest night skiing arenas in Europe.

Other well-known winter sports destinations such as the numerous ski areas in and around Innsbruck or the Stubai Glacier can be reached within 45 minutes by car.

Winter hiking and snowshoeing

In the cold season it becomes clear that the Wipptal is not only a hiking paradise in summer. Around 70 kilometers of perfectly groomed winter hiking trails are waiting to be conquered. On the valley tour to the neighboring village of Matrei, for example, you can start right outside the front door of your chalet, and the Nößlachhütte can also be easily reached after a short gondola ride from the middle station of the Bergeralm.

Those who prefer to swap their hiking boots for snowshoes should do so on a guided snowshoe hike. The rustic huts along the marked trails provide for Tyrolean delicacies and one or two thirst quenchers. The right equipment is available for you free of charge at the information office in Steinach.

Ski tours & cross-country skiing

The Tyrolean Wipptal and its untouched side valleys are a true winter Eldorado for ski touring fans. In addition to its scenic highlights, the region is also known for its varied tours and its guaranteed snow (thanks to its location on the weather divide between North and South Tyrol). The region also scores with around 70 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails, 40 kilometers of which are in the Gschnitztal, not far from your chalet. All trails in the Wipptal can be used free of charge! For cross-country beginners there is equipment rental in the immediate vicinity of the Bergeralm chalets.

Sledding & ice skating

There are nine perfectly groomed toboggan runs around our chalet village. All are easy to moderate. The longest of the natural toboggan runs leads from the highest monastery in Central Europe, Maria Waldrast (1,570 m), five kilometers to Matrei. Some of the tracks are even illuminated at night, and there are places to stop for refreshments everywhere to strengthen yourself before the ascent or to end the evening comfortably after the toboggan run. Those who prefer to be more comfortable can take the Bergeralmbahn to the middle station and toboggan from there back into the valley almost to the front door. There is also a toboggan rental on site.

The Wipptal holiday region invites you to ice skate on numerous outdoor ice rinks that are illuminated in the evening, but also in the Steinach indoor ice rink, completely relaxed and without the hustle and bustle. The ice rink also offers ice skate rental, and there are penguin figures for the little ones that make learning to ice skate even more fun. The older ones get their money's worth during the Christmas holidays with the hot rhythms of the “ice disco” in the mountaineering village of St. Jodok.

Guestcard Wipptal

As our guest, you will receive the Wipptal guest card upon arrival and benefit from numerous free holiday activities and discounts. The card is, for example, a free ticket for local trains and all bus routes in the Wipptal region. It includes discounts from various service partners in the region and free or reduced participation in the guest program. The free ski bus, the free use of the cross-country ski trails and the included equipment rental are also popular.

Malin's Favorite Places

Malin Rottensteiner

My name is Malin Rottensteiner. As reception manager, I would like to welcome you to our Bergeralm Chalets in Steinach am Brenner. Because I am a native of Wipptal, it is really important to me, of course, that you have a wonderful time here in my home region. That’s why I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the most beautiful nearby excursion destinations and best holiday tips.

The proximity of the Bergeralm Chalets to Innsbruck and neighboring South Tyrol makes our chalet village an outstanding base for exciting holiday activities as well as discovery tours. One vacation is clearly too short to visit all of the region’s sightseeing attractions.

I look forward to seeing you soon in Wipptal.

Innsbruck

Tip 1: INNSBRUCK

Innsbruck, the provincial capital of Tyrol, lies approximately a 30-minute drive from the Bergeralm Chalets and is infused with a vivacious Alpine-urban vibe. Here, the big-city lifestyle meets mountain scenery beyond compare. The highest point in the city is 2642 m above sea level. From the heart of the inner city, you can ride the Hungerburg- and Nordkettenbahn lifts all the way up into the high mountains to the Hafelekar (2256 m), from where you are able to enjoy truly breathtaking panoramic views – to the north, of the biggest nature park in Austria, Alpenpark Karwendel with its awe-inspiring limestone crags. To the south, the city lies there at your feet, while your eyes can roam out to the Dolomites of South Tyrol. On your way to the “Top of Innsbruck”, you will find it rewarding to make a stop at the Alpenzoo, the highest theme zoo in Europe.

Chic boutiques and big shopping centers also guarantee pure shopping enjoyment.

Swarovski

Tip 2: Swarovski Crystal Worlds

Swarovski Crystal Worlds is one of the most visited sights in Austria. It is located in Wattens to the east of Innsbruck, approximately 40 km from the Bergeralm Chalets, also the location of the headquarters of global crystal empire, Swarovski. Since opening in 1995, Crystal Worlds has welcomed over 15 million visitors from around the world. Renowned artist André Heller conceived a dream world here with 17 Chambers of Wonder and a fantastical garden, always guaranteed to enchant big and small alike. In addition to sparkling (special) exhibitions and worlds of experience, visitors are also greeted by the world’s biggest Swarovski shop, a café & restaurant as well as an adventure playground just for the kids.

Achensee

Tip 3: Achensee

The “Tyrolean Sea”, as Achensee is often nicknamed, is approximately a 50-minute drive from here. The biggest lake in Tyrol – flanked by the summits of the Karwendel and Rofan mountains – extends for a length of over 8 km and is visually reminiscent of a Norwegian fjord. In summer, its beaches draw visitors with turquoise-blue water. At Atoll Achensee right on the lakeshore, visitors discover a 50,000 m² sports and recreation center, including an extraordinary sauna paradise. Even back in the days of the Danube monarchy, this region was an extremely popular destination for summer getaways. There is no better way to evoke those bygone days than a cruise across the lake on one of the excursion ships.

South Tyrol

Tip 4: South Tyrol

Bergeralm Chalets is located approximately 13 km from the Brenner Pass and thus the Italian border. Right next to the Brenner, at Outlet Center Brenner to be precise, you will discover great shopping opportunities at over 70 shops representing international and Italian designer labels, open year-round with the exception of 25 December and 1 January. A drive into neighboring South Tyrol is an unforgettable experience, above all because of its astonishing natural beauty and delectable culinary variety. Whether the majestic Dolomites or the “Wine Road”, the traditional spa town Merano with its Mediterranean vegetation, a stroll amid the historic arcades of the provincial capital, Bolzano, or perhaps just a short half-hour side trip from the Bergeralm Chalets to Sterzing, where you can enjoy original Italian specialties set against a medieval backdrop – South Tyrol is always well worth an excursion.

Lake Garda

Tip 5: Lake Garda

A drive of just over 2 hours from the Bergeralm Chalets via the Brenner autobahn will get you to Lake Garda. For a day trip, we suggest a day tour through the historic region of Welschtirol, today’s Trentino, leading you along the north shore of Lake Garda to Torbole and Riva del Garda. Flanked by steep rock faces, visitors are greeted by a unique atmosphere amid alpine and Mediterranean flora and fauna. I especially recommend a walk along the spacious lake promenade, past palms and cypress trees to the small town of Riva, with its typically Italian ambience. From there, you can embark on an enjoyable boat tour to the picturesque neighboring towns of Limone and Malcesine, or indulge yourself in an extended shopping expedition, winding down your day at one of the outstanding eateries as you savor an array of regional specialties.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS WIPPTAL

The Wipptal is a scenic mountain region in western Austria that extends south of the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck to the Brenner Pass on the border with South Tyrol. An insider tip are the natural, wild and romantic side valleys, which offer unique insights into the original Tyrol and impressive views of the 3,000-meter peaks of the main Alpine ridge with its snow-covered glaciers.   It is not for nothing that the German magazine GEO chose the Wipptal 2017 among the ten international “trend travel destinations”.

The abundance of holiday activities in combination with our modern and centrally located Bergeralm chalets in Steinach am Brenner offer the ideal conditions for a successful summer holiday in Tyrol.

Hiking in Tyrol

Despite the proximity to the alpine-urban provincial capital Innsbruck, the Tyrolean Wipptal is very tranquil away from the main traffic routes. Thanks to its originality and natural beauty as well as the extensive hiking offer with 500 km of marked hiking trails, the region is a true paradise for nature lovers and mountaineers.

The multi-faceted hiking offer ranges from family hikes, some of which are suitable for prams, to the idyllic Obernberger See or to the water adventure world Bärenbachl, with start and end points not far from your chalet, to challenging summit tours such as the mighty rock-ice pyramid of the Olperer (3,476 m) at the end of the valley of the mountaineering village St. Jodok, Schmirn- & Valsertal.

Bike Holidays

The extensive mountain bike and cycle path network between Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass covers 150 kilometers. Mountain bikers and e-bikers alone have a total of 17 routes to choose from - from the leisurely alpine pasture circuit to the spectacular crossing of the Alps. They all lead through the picturesque natural landscape of the Tyrolean Wipptal and invite you to stop off at one of the numerous managed huts.

Downhill enthusiasts can let off steam in the Bikepark Tirol in Steinach near the Bergeralm. Families, on the other hand, get their money's worth on the 16.5 km long bike tour from Steinach through the Gschnitztal to the Laponesalm. And leisure cyclists can explore the section of the Transalp long-distance cycle path Munich-Venice to the Brenner, in order to enjoy an original Italian cappuccino there.

A bike and e-bike rental is located at the valley station of the Bergeralmbahn, just a few meters from your accommodation.

Climbing & Swiming

The topographical diversity and the modern infrastructure make the Wipptal holiday region the ideal destination for a climbing holiday. In addition to the natural alpine climbing opportunities, there are various via ferratas and climbing gardens in the vicinity of the Bergeralm Chalets, which are perfect for families and beginners as well as ambitious hobby climbers.

If the weather doesn't cooperate, you can use the climbing hall at JUFA Steinach right next to your holiday complex. The “basecamp Matrei” climbing and competence center is located in the neighboring village of Matrei, where complete climbing equipment and via ferrata sets are also available for hire. And in the Alpine Safety Area in Gschnitz, climbing enthusiasts will find a training area where they can test their skills on via ferratas of difficulty levels A to E.

After an eventful day, you can look forward to cooling off in the local outdoor pool within walking distance or in one of the idyllic mountain lakes. The water and adventure world Bärenbachl - only a gondola ride away from the chalet village - with its diverse play stations is especially popular with the little water rats.
